Forward Attitudes: Our Means

We have 2 core values and 4 attitudes that colour our world-view. Together with our 9 principles they form the basis of our values, policies, and priorities.

The ends and the means go hand-in-hand.
Core Values
The following two values should intersect with everything that we do or aim for.
I. Balance
Even a broken status-quo needs to be dismantled with care.
The revolutionary sentiment of “break things first, build up later” is extremely risky and often backfires. The goal is then for the Forward party to do the difficult job of maintaining strong positions while balancing the following:
Revolutionary vs Iterative processes
Optimism vs Cynicism
Fear vs. Hope
Distinctiveness vs. Broad Appeal
Pragmatism vs. Idealism
II. Long-term Focus
Without a destination, getting lost is easy.
So to not lose sight of what matters, long term focus would mean two things for the Forward Party:
10-year horizons: This is very long in political terms, but would allow us to look past immediate distractions and to anticipate what the next generation would deal with.
What could the opposition do with the precedents we set: We can trust ourselves in the moment with great power, but can we trust whoever comes after us? Can we trust the great power will not corrupt us? By keeping this in mind we can keep ourselves and whoever comes after us in check.
Attitudes
The following 4 are the cornerstones that we will rely on as we execute our visions and communicate ourselves to the general public.
Tolerance: To listen in good faith to all ideas, even if they come from sources we otherwise detest.
Flexibility: Quickly adapting to circumstances keeps us steady.
Pragmatism: Perfection must never get in the way of progress.
Cynical Optimism: Expect the best, prepare for the worst.
There are nuances of course, so in following blog posts I will be expanding on each of the above points. In the meantime, you can see our spirit and foundations in action within our values, policies, and priorities.
